ATEX certification for diesel engines according to IEC 60079-45:2025
Attention
-
IEC 60079-45:2025 specifies the requirements for only spark ignited reciprocating internal combustion or RIC engines.
-
ConformEx has adopted IEC 60079-45 instead of UNI EN 1679-1:2011 for evaluation and certification.
-
General safety requirements and/or measures to remove the hazards and limit the risks on RIC engines for use in explosive atmospheres, are specified in EN 1834 series, including:
-
EN 1834-1:2000 (Group II engines for use in flammable gas and vapour atmospheres);
-
EN 1834-2:2000 (Group I engines for use in underground workings susceptible to firedamp and/or combustible dust);
-
EN 1834-3:2000 (roup II engines for use in flammable dust atmospheres);
-
-
ComformEx performs assessment and ATEX certification for spark ignited reciprocating internal combustion (RIC) engines, on the basis of EN 1834 series, plus requirements of IEC 60079-45:2025.
Aim of publishing and scope of IEC 60079-45
To enhance the safety of personnel by providing minimum requirements for
-
electrical ignition systems for spark-ignited reciprocating internal combustion engines, parts of which provide Equipment Protection Level (EPL) Gc;
-
systems rated for normal operation with secondary voltages less than or equal to 60 kV;
-
only to the ignition systems or the individual ignition system components used on reciprocating internal combustion engines that are stationary when in operation and
-
mobile machinery where the internal combustion engine can be potential source of ignition.
Main and common systems within the scope of IEC 60079-45 for ATEX certification
-
gas compressors;
-
electric power generators;
-
forklift trucks, and
-
pumps.
Requirements of IEC 60079-45
-
minimum construction and test requirements for the safe operation of ignition systems and components for spark- ignited reciprocating internal combustion engines providing EPL Gc for equipment Group IIB+H2 , IIB or IIA;
-
manufacturer installation and maintenance recommendations, are the requirements which must be fulfilled prior to implement the requirements of IEC 60079-45.
Systems excluded from the scope of IEC 60079-45
-
Engine ignition systems that utilize a breaker point or magneto type ignition systems as these would not be suitable for use in a hazardous area;
-
Road vehicles;
-
Low voltage parts and electrical installation that are not included in the ignition system, such as
-
various sensors and thermocouples;
-
throttle actuator(s);
-
fuel control valve(s);
-
human machine interface (HMI);
-
respective harness and wiring; and
-
all the other items that might belong to the integrated control system besides the ignition system.
-
Relation with relevant Standards
IEC 60079-45, supplements and modifies the
-
general requirements of IEC 60079-0; and
-
the requirements of ISO/IEC 80079-41.
Note: in cases of confliction with IEC 60079-0 or ISO/IEC 80079-41, the requirement of IEC 60079-45, takes precedence.
